Parish Footpaths

There are several walks around the village. They vary in length and difficulty. Please remember dogs should be kept on a lead, particularly where there are animals around, also when you are by the water as we have some Aylesbury ducks living there  and there are also some wild ducks, moorhens and egrets in the vicinity. Please also clear up your dog mess.

A Short Round Walk
From the stepping stones you can either walk down the track by the water as far as the South west Water pumping station where you will see the sign post leading you up some steps across a style into the field above. Turn back across the field and through the gate back onto the road. If you want to go the other way round the gate into the field is just up the tidal road past the first cottage on the right. Dogs should be kept on a lead in the field particularly if there are any animals in there. The track along the water is not passable at high tide.

Herring Street to the Church
From the village take the first turning left after you cross the bridge. A short steep walk will take you to Herring Street which is the first turning on the left. Just past Gibbs Cottage you will see the sign post for the footpath. Follow the path down through the orchard, across the stream and across the field. This will bring out just below the church. After visiting our beautiful church, take the track back down to the road and turn left to take you back to the village.

Round Walk
Take the road out of the village towards Frogmore. Just past Westcourt on your left you will see a track, take this to the top of the hill and turn left. A short way down on the right you will see another track which takes you down to North Pool. Here turn left onto the road back up to the road to Halwell. Follow the road all the way round until you get to Hill Head. Here if you fork right you will come to a seat which commands lovely views of the estuary. If you take the left fork go down the hill and take the next left. This brings you down to the pontoon and back to the village.

Halwell Woods
This is a permissive path. If you followed the round walk you will have passed the sign on your right just before Hill Head. If you start from the village follow the creek on the right hand side down to the pontoon. Carry on up the hill and turn right at the junction. Turn down the track at the sign until you get to Beaconswood Plantation and turn right down the path. At the end turn left onto the road which will take you down o the woods. Follow the path into the wood until you get to the end. Unfortunately you then have to turn round and come back the way you came as there is no round walk.

South Pool to Waterhead
Not for the faint hearted! From the stepping stones follow the tidal road until Gullet Corner. Here you will see a track going straight up the hill (don’t follow the road round the left hand bend). This track becomes a path which once you have reached the top descends down to Waterhead. Here you can cross the stepping stones and either turn right to take you to Goodshelter and on to East Portlemouth, or you can turn left to take you up Wilton Hill back to South Pool. REMEMBER TO CHECK THE TIDE BEFORE YOU START AS YOU CANNOT CROSS THE STONES WHEN THE TIDE IS IN AND THERE IS NO OTHER WAY ROUND!
